If you have a reasonable feature list (meaning one that doesn?t lock you into an expensive item), you?ll find that quite a few items will match up with the features you?re looking for.

Don?t settle on one just yet. Find several models you?d be willing to buy, then shop around.

For starters, if you decide that you?re only going to buy this one specific model of what you?re looking for, you?re almost always going to overpay for it. Just by that decision alone, you?ve closed yourself off to a lot of potential bargains that you might find on similar models.

In other words, it pays to have a nice list of models you?d be willing to buy, along with a feature list so that you can figure out if other models match your needs.

The best way to do this is research. For many items, one really effective way of doing this is simply browsing versions of the item at amazon.com. While you shouldn?t necessarily buy there, it can be a very useful tool for identifying models that match your needs.

For unbiased comparisons of items with similar features, use Consumer Reports. Whenever I?m about to make a significant purchase, I stop at the library for a look at some back issues of CR.

In the end, I usually wind up with a list of quite a few models that will suit my needs quite well. Usually, this list is somewhat ranked, with ones that have better numbers in Consumer Reports ranked above others, but I don?t necessarily rule any out. I do this for ?tiebreaking.?

Once I have that list of models, I start shopping. Online shopping is easy with a bunch of places at your fingertips, but it?s worth looking around brick and mortar stores as well. You?ll often find sales you didn?t expect.

I usually give myself a timeframe for the purchase ? say, a month or two. During that period, I do some comparison shopping for the item when I have a free moment or two. I?ll look at the selection in brick and mortar stores if I happen to be there, or I?ll look at websites during idle moments in the evening.

I usually get a pretty good idea of what a good price is for the item after just a bit of searching. I use that as my benchmark, and if I find an opportunity to beat that benchmark by 20% or so, I go ahead and make the purchase. Sometimes you?ll stumble on better sales, but I?ve also seen good discounts disappear while I?ve looked for something better. When my timeframe is up, I go with the option that is the best bargain for me.

Shop around, but know what you?re shopping for. You?ll end up with a good buy on something that actually suits your needs.

Branden R. Williams, Business Security Specialist ? Where is your …

May 17th, 2012 by Branden Williams

I recently attended a fantastic roundtable put on by Financial Times in New York and as I?m sitting listening to a group of folks that specialize in anti-money laundering and fraud, one person stated that people detected the vast majority of fraud or money laundering with tools playing a supporting role.

By itself, this seems to be a bit damning toward the technical sector essentially stating that they aren?t any good at detecting fraud. Or at least their tools aren?t any good. But technology has always played a catch-up role when compared to human intuition. It could be simple things like highlighting the right statistical inconsistencies for analysts or complex things like playing chess against the world?s best, but we?re all still trying to mimic a human (with scale) by building intelligence into systems.

Stop!, by Qfamily

So this really begs the question, whether you are in the information security business or the fraud prevention business, where is your first line of defense? I?m willing to bet it falls in line with the observations from the roundtable and it is entirely human focused. But I?m also willing to bet that your company realizes this plan isn?t scalable and is trying to find ways to build human intelligence artificially into our infrastructure to aid the humans. For example, humans cannot read millions of logs manually, they have systems that triage mountains of work into molehills of actions for further analysis.

So the question becomes, how do we accelerate this so we can get to the point of more front-line defenses being built into artificial intelligence instead of relying almost solely on human intuition?

Companies require comprehensive visibility into events into their network with the ability to incorporate both internal and external sources of intelligence to create actionable intelligence that can feed an automated, agile control set. Sure, it sounds a little like the beginnings of Skynet, but those that fear the rise of the machines may choose to build the intelligence without the capacity to act, thus still requiring human interaction but theoretically with better information. The goal still needs to be furthering our ability to transfer human intelligence into systems to help us do more with less (and reliably!).

Multiple Nexus devices could be a game-changer for Google and Android

Android graffiti at MWC

Google's reported introduction of more manufacturers into the Nexus fold could be a stroke of genius, but it’s not without its risks.?

We don’t often present entire articles of opinion on unconfirmed rumors here at Android Central, but the report this week concerning Google’s Nexus plans is a doozie. According to the Wall Street Journal, Google is dramatically altering the nature of its Nexus program, bringing up to five manufacturers on board this year, with the aim of launching multiple Nexus devices with the next version of Android in late 2012. Oh, and this lineup will apparently include tablets as well as phones.

Google isn’t commenting officially, and the reports will likely remain the focus of fervent speculation as we approach Nexus season later in the year. But for the purposes of this article, let’s assume they’re true, and that Google will indeed work with different hardware partners in order to launch up to five Nexuses around Thanksgiving.

To Android fans, it sounds like a dream offering — more variety and choice in hardware when it comes time for a new version of their favorite OS. And more opportunities to get the very latest version of Android — pure, vanilla Android, unmolested by custom user interfaces or carrier-mandated crapware. And as Android users ourselves, we’re sure that if this does come to pass, it’ll be an overwhelmingly positive development for everyone who buys an Android smartphone. It’s an opportunity for Google to get new versions of its OS out to consumers faster than ever, on varied hardware, in more markets than would be possible with just one hardware partner. And having multiple phones in different markets with the same excellent vanilla Android experience will help Google to better establish stock Android among the other major flavors of the OS.

But a multitude of challenges will face Google and its new Nexus partners as they prepare the next generation of Android phones and tablets. First of all, let’s look at why Google’s (probably) doing this. The original WSJ article points to concerns from manufacturers that Google may look to prop up the loss-making Motorola, which it's nearly done acquiring, by giving it privileged access to Android code at the expense of other phone-makers. (For its part, Google's Andy Rubin has said said this wouldn't happen.) And Google’s desire to placate its hardware partners is undoubtedly a factor. As are the company’s ambitions to establish itself as a hardware vendor through its “Play” Store. But it’s also a way for Google to remedy some of the ailments currently afflicting its mobile platform.

Fired ex-Syracuse hoops coach’s wife to sue ESPN

(AP) ? The wife of a fired Syracuse University assistant basketball coach claims ESPN trampled her reputation by broadcasting salacious and false stories about molestation claims against her husband.

A lawyer for Laurie Fine says she will file a libel lawsuit in federal court Wednesday against the sports network and two employees. ESPN in November broke the story of two former Syracuse ball boys who claimed they were molested by coach Bernie Fine decades ago.

Bernie Fine has denied wrongdoing. He hasn’t been charged because of the statute of limitations.

Laurie Fine claims ESPN rushed to capitalize on the unfolding Penn State University sex-abuse scandal and overlooked doubts about the ball boys’ credibility.

An ESPN spokesman says the Bristol, Conn.-based network hasn’t reviewed the lawsuit but stands by its reporting.

Contraceptive Mandate Forces Franciscan U. To Drop Health …

Contraceptive Mandate Forces Franciscan U. To Drop Health Insurance

Apparently, that ?compromise? didn?t assuage the university, and we can probably expect many more to follow suit (depending on who wins the election)

(Life News) Franciscan University appears to be the first casualty of the new Obama HHS mandate that requires Catholic colleges, groups and businesses to pay for drugs that may cause abortions and birth control for their employees.

Although President Barack Obama declared ?If you like your health care coverage you can keep it,? when it came to passing Obamacare, a Catholic college in Ohio has determined it will no longer offer a student health insurance plan.

?The Obama Administration has mandated that all health insurance plans must cover ?women?s health services? including contraception, sterilization, and abortion-causing medications as part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA),? the university says in a new post on its website. ?Up to this time, Franciscan University has specifically excluded these services and products from its student health insurance policy, and we will not participate in a plan that requires us to violate the consistent teachings of the Catholic Church on the sacredness of human life.?

?Additionally, the PPACA increased the mandated maximum coverage amount for student policies to $100,000 for the 2012-13 school year, which would effectively double your premium cost for the policy in fall 2012, with the expectation of further increases in the future,? FUS continues.

?Due to these changes in regulation by the federal government, beginning with the 2012-13 school year, the University 1) will no longer require that all full-time undergraduate students carry health insurance, 2) will no longer offer a student health insurance plan, and 3) will no longer bill those not covered under a parent/guardian plan or personal plan for student health insurance,? the college said.

This is a direct result of Obamacare, a monstrous piece of legislation that went well beyond the original intent, which was simply to make sure that the 30-45 million Americans without health insurance had access to it, a worthy cause. However, we ended up with this pig of a bill that the majority of Americans hate and involves itself way too much with American?s health insurance and care, driving up costs and incentivizing organizations to drop their insurance. How, exactly, does it help make sure people have access to insurance by slapping even more mandates on to what must be offered in insurance plans?

Tom Crowe, an employee at Franciscan U., writes at Catholic Vote

But there you have it: thanks to the government?s firm desire to make sure the one or two women left in the country who did not have easy and cheap access to contraceptives, abortifacients, and sterilization procedures, our 2,500 students will no longer have an insurance plan ready and waiting for them.

The rule was surely meant to pander to women by offering them ?free? stuff (women should be insulted that the Obama administration thinks women aren?t capable of paying the small costs for contraceptives themselves) with an election coming up. There was zero reason for the contraceptive mandate. This was micro-managing in the market, and the Law Of Unintended Consequences has turned around and bit Team Obama in the posterior.
